History of the School
Bangkok Christian College was the first ever Private Boys’ School in Thailand. It was founded by American Presbyterian Missionaries on 30th September 1852 (B.E. 2395) during the reign of King Rama IV. Under the patronage of His majesty, the missionaries bought land in Kudeejeen district and in Samrae district. The school was first built in Kudeejeen and was, not long after, moved to Samrae. Later, the missionaries needed to move to a new more suitable location that could accommodate a bigger school. They subsequently bought land from Chao Praya SurasakMontree in the Pramuan Road area. Thanks to the munificence of King Rama V, they were granted a further contribution of 20 chang (1,600 baht) to buy the aforementioned land in order to build the school.
Bangkok Christian College Today
Currently, Bangkok Christian College is run by the Foundation of The Church of Christ in Thailand. It uses innovative methods in the development of the studying and teaching of English language with the aim of enabling students to communicate using the four essential skills – reading, writing, listening and speaking. The students receive their tuition from highly qualified and experienced native English speaking Thai teachers. The school places special emphasis on arranging activities which promote the development of high moral standards among the students and which encourage participation in areas such as art, music and sport. The school believes that active participation in these areas will increase the students’ appreciation of them and give the students inspiration to strive to reach their full potential and to prepare to become leaders of the future.
The school provides an environment conducive to the pursuit of knowledge. It has designated learning centers, equipped with a wide variety of high technology teaching and study aids and equipment. It also has ample areas for sports and possesses information technology systems which are state of the art in the field of academic management and administration.
Teaching and Learning Programs
The school’s curriculum is based on the standards contained in the Basic Education Curriculum as defined by officials of the Ministry of Education. The school accommodates students from Grade 1 to Grade 12, who are divided into the following programs:
The Standard Program. In this program, students receive all their tuition in Thai, except for their English language classes, in which they have two options :
(a) The regular program, in which they receive most of their English tuition from highly qualified and experienced Thai teachers
(b) The Intensive English Program, in which they receive the majority of their tuition from native English speaking teachers.
The English Immersion Program, in which all subjects are taught in English by native speakers, apart from Thai Language and Culture and Social Studies.
